Professor K.P. Kannan, the Conference President of the Indian Society of Labour Economics (ISLE), was conferred V. V. Giri Memorial Award 2008 by the Hon’ble Minister of State for Labour & Employment, Government of India, Shri Oscar Fernandese on 8 August 2008 in a ceremony in New Delhi. The award has been given to Professor Kannan for his outstanding contribution on issues relating to social security for labour. This award has been instituted by V. V. Giri National Labour Institute in the memory of late Shri V.V. Giri, the founder President of the Indian Society of Labour Economics.

While receiving the award, Prof. Kannan appreciated the role of the ISLE in providing him the opportunity to further his interest in research in labour issues, and specially thanked his teacher, Prof. T.S. Papola, President of the ISLE, for kindling his interest in labour economics. He announced that the money value of the award (Rs, one lakh) received by him will be donated to the ISLE, which is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year
