The 54th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Labour Economics (ISLE) was held during 20–22 December 2011 under the auspices of the Department of Economics, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. Professor Sukhadeo Thorat, Chairman, Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), presided over the Conference. Professor Kiran Barman, Professor of Economics, BHU, was the Local Organising Secretary of the Conference. Professor B.V. Singh, also from the Economics Department of the University, was the local Co-Organising Secretary.
The Conference delegates and participants included almost 400 distinguished academicians, representatives of industry, trade union leaders, policy-makers, researchers and scholars. The Conference themes taken up for discussion during the technical sessions were: Wages and Wage Share; Employment in the Post-Reform Period; and Labour Rights in the Globalising World. About 200 researchers and other participants made presentations on the three themes of the conference as well as some special panels.
