Abstract

Historical Patterns of Labour Supply in India

The paper addresses a central problem for labour historians—explaining the long-term shift of work from self- to wage employment. The paper questions the received view, which explains the shift with reference to crises in self-employment that forced peasants and artisans to become wage-earners. It instead favours an explanation that allows the worker the capacity to choose, and suggests how we can read these choices on the basis of historical evidence.
